A Lifeline for the Hospitality Industry

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced in today’s budget that there will be another boost for the troubled hospitality industry, due to open later than other industries, as he unveiled a new ‘restart grant’ from April to help businesses reopen with grants up to £18,000, dependent on size of premises.

It is hoped that the fund will help the hospitality sector bounce back from the pandemic however, there is still the sad possibility that many businesses will not be able to reopen when the country eventually eases its way out of lockdown, even with the assistance of this grant.

 

 

Other Budget points:

  • A call for the current VAT cut to 5% for meals and soft drinks to be extended; expanded to include alcoholic drinks.restaurant
  • Furlough extended until September 2021.
  • New government loans from £25,000 to £10 million.
  • £3,000 assistance to hire an apprentice.
  • Corporation tax increased to 25% from 2023 with other tax not being raised until 2026.
  • Business rate holiday for the 2021-22 financial year but only until June, with a reduced rate after that for the rest of the financial year.

UK Hospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said:

‘An extension of the 5 % VAT rate was absolutely crucial for hospitality businesses.

Confirmation that the Government will provide support for a full year will bring peace of mind to the sector…’
